Dear Hair Doctor,

My hair is damaged so I've stopped using hot tools on it but it still has a lot of split ends and it’s still falling out. Please help!

Hi,

First things first – have a good haircut to get rid of any remaining split ends and invest in a professional repairing shampoo and conditioner to start the repair process. An in-salon treatment for damaged hair would give you a head start too.

Stay away from the hot tools, like you say, and let your hair dry naturally when possible. Some people have had good results from nutritional supplements, which can improve the condition and strengthen hair (as well as skin and nails) – visit your local health shop and ask them to advise you.

If your hair is falling out at the root, as opposed to breaking off somewhere along the length, it may be you need to visit a doctor or trichologist to check that there are no underlying problems.

Hiya,

Heated tools such as straighteners and curling tongs can be very damaging to the hair; therefore your hair’s condition deteriorates. Have you thought about having a new style that will suit you and your hair type, resulting in you not having to use heated appliances? This will reduce your number of split ends, as well as minimise further damage to your hair.

I would also suggest investing in regular treatments in-salon or at home such as Sebastian Hydre Deep Moisturising Treatment (£18.95 @ HOB Salons) to revitalise the condition of your hair.

Hi,

If your hair is falling out from the roots, then I suggest going to see a doctor to see if there is something more serious going on. If your hair is just snapping and breaking, then you have to just be good to it and give it a little TLC.

Not heat styling is a great way to get your hair back into good shape, as it is not stressing it out. Protein and moisture are the two things that hair needs to look gorgeous, something which maybe your hair might be lacking. I would suggest a moisture shampoo and mask regime at home like Kérastase Bain Satin and Masquintense. Also a good in-salon protein treatment is called Biolustré. This fills the hair with essential proteins and makes it stronger. You then should feel on the mend!
