Two key summer looks from the runway

Nelson Brown, who has considerable experience from London Fashion Week and beyond, tells us about two of the key trends that are popular this summer...

Modern hair is led by interesting texture for summer. Gone are the ringlet curls created with tongs; the ‘done it myself’ movement is the new trend!

1)   The first look is all about diffused texture resulting in a ‘rained on’ effect...

To create the look:

  • Damp down hair with ‘prep’ by Bumble and bumble and comb flat
  • Diffuse dry to leave hair looking rained on with texture coming through underneath to give a unique balance of smooth and curly hair
  • Using your fingers, tweeze areas of the crown out in a pinching movement to break up the flatness

2)   The second look is an up-to-date take on the scrunch...

The scrunch – most people will remember this technique backed up with a tight perm, but it’s back to give an individual finish to your own hair type. We all have different texture, so the technique utilises your hair and its movement to the maximum.

To create the look:

  • Apply a non-sticky product to the hair that will give hold – surf spray or a light foam is best
  • Whilst your hair’s wet, use the balls of your fingertips and rotate them against the scalp with your dryer, occasionally closing your hand with the hair inside it
  • Keep going until hair is dry
  • Use your fingers to position hair at the end

Tip: This look is best created without using a mirror.  Once hair is dry, only then use the mirror to place the hair into position.

Both these looks are great with centre or side partings, but centre rocks for me every time! However, instead of parting the front left to right and making the centre parting flat, try pulling the hairline down and forward with your fingers, then gently pushing it to the side, encasing the face shape.
