Wedding hair dos and don'ts

Russell Stevens of Eleven Hair is a favourite amongst brides and women who want glamorous styling. Here he tells us the dos and don'ts to choosing a wedding style that's right for you...

  • DO decide upon your hair colour at the same time you decide upon your dress. When you say 'yes' to the dress, you'll be taking in your overall appearance including your hair colour. If you then change it, it may not look so striking. For instance, golden blonde hair with an ivory dress looks amazing. Ash blonde hair with an ivory dress may look dirty.
  • DO also choose your flowers, if wearing them in your hair, when you've decided on your hair colour. A change in tone may not look so good.
  • DON'T ask your groom-to-be what he thinks of your hair trial. Chances are he won't want to commit for fear of upsetting you. Just staying quiet may upset you too - he can't really win.
  • DO wear a similar neckline to your hair trial. You'll be amazed at how one style can look great with a V-neck but with a strapless gown loses all its impact.
  • DO consider the whole wedding day, not just what your hair will look like at the altar. If you and your soon-to-be husband love to dance, think about how well your style might stand up to the rigours of the dance floor.
  • DON’T be bullied into wearing a tiara or an elaborate ‘updo’ just because it’s your mother dream. It’s your day and if you want to go for a simple style, stick to your guns! You’ll be more relaxed on the day if you are 100% happy with your choices.
  • DON’T be tempted to have a very trendy style, as then it won't look aged when you look back at your wedding photos years later.
  • DON’T leave your colour to the last minute - have it done a fortnight before; that way if there is a problem with the colour there’s time to rectify it. And if you’ve had it highlighted, avoid the swimming pool – chlorine can ruin blondes!
  • DON’T worry if your style really starts to fall apart, just take it all out and shake it free. You could catch it into a low ponytail at the base of the neck and pull out some tendrils to soften then look. A flower secured into the ponytail will make it look special.
