Menopause Hair Tips

Fudge Professional Global Ambassador, Jonathan Andrew gives us his top tips on caring for your hair during Menopause…

There are numerous challenges for hair during the menopause, but I would say the main one is that hair can lose its volume and can become finer, which for a lot of women this can be frustrating. Hair can damage easier too, as oestrogen levels decrease which is a big factor in hair growth and health – so it might not get past a certain length, or it feels more brittle, and you see more shed in the shower and on your clothes. To combat this, eat more omega rich foods like eggs, avocado, seeds/nuts, fish, leafy greens, or even adding a collagen supplement/powder into your daily drinks.

During menopause, you may also want to rethink your hairstyle and haircut. It’s the perfect time to take stock of the condition of your hair and avoid it feeling lacklustre, dry, lank etc. Ensuring regular trims to keep the hair looking thicker will help. Layers for thicker hair are ideal and blunt cuts for finer hair textures.

Listen to your stylist when they give you advice on how to style your hair at home. Your hair may need a new style and look; different doesn’t always mean short, but it means you can experiment with something new to make styling and the look become easier for you. This is a great time for to understand the benefits of products and the different types that are available from shampoo and conditioner like Fudge Professional Damage Rewind (£16 each) to correct any damage from colouring and styling to volume and thickening products like Fudge Professional XXL hair thickener (£15) and Fudge Professional XPander Foam (£14) – both are great options.

Also, ask your stylist about the ingredients you should be looking for in products. Minoxidil helps stimulate the follicle, so it is good if you’re experiencing hair loss during the menopause. Products like Fudge Professional Clean Mint (£14) can be great too, as it helps cleanse and nourish the scalp, which will in turn give the follicles the best chance to produce healthy hair.
