The Good Salon Guide is the only independent, nationwide scheme for assessing professional standards and services within the hairdressing industry. Listing around 2,000 salons in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the Good Salon Guide has become the Kitemark of quality for the public and hairdressing industry.
Hairdressing salons are visited and objectively assessed
by professionally trained inspectors against a set of strict criteria in the same way as the well-known AA or RAC hotel guides, giving consumers confidence in their choice.
All salons are reassessed annually.
A Good Salon Guide rating shows that the salon has suitably trained and qualified staff, top quality products and aims to achieve and maintain the highest standards.
The Good Salon Guide was launched in 1993 in response to consumer demand. British hairdressing may be the best in the world with hairdressers from America, the Far East and Europe coming here to learn from the masters, but sadly standards do vary and there are no regulations in Britain and Ireland governing who can practise as a hairdresser.
Salons are professionally assessed against objective criteria and rated accordingly.
If a hairdressing salon meets a set of minimum standards, it is given Registered status.
Thereafter salons are rated as 3, 4 or 5 Star.
Listings are published in magazines such as Hairflair & Beauty and on the Good Salon Guide website. In addition, a variety of salons are featured every month in Hairstyles Only magazine.
The Good Salon Guide headquarters are located in Portsmouth, Hampshire, with representatives based throughout the UK and Ireland.
Dawson Penn, Chairman and Founder of the Guide, has been part of the hairdressing industry all his working life, firstly as a hairdressing apprentice and until recently, as a salon owner.
Since it began, the Good Salon Guide has gathered the support of all the major hairdressing bodies and is committed to working with the hairdressing industry to improve and maintain the highest standards.
