A University of Glasgow course is featuring the muti-award-winning Anne Veck Salon in Oxford as a case study for a new course based around sustainability.

The four-week online course, Tackling Climate Change: Sustainable Business Models for a Circular Economy, is aimed at both the public and business owners and aims to demonstrate how circular economies enable sustainability and help respond to the climate emergency.

The syllabus comprises 12 hours of learning, with insight into the Anne Veck business model featuring in week two. The case study includes contributions from salon founders Anne and Keith and explores how they made the transition from a linear business to a sustainable salon that enables a circular economy.

Anne – who has a salon close to the centre of Oxford – has spent the last few years making adjustments on both a personal and professional level to introduce sustainable measures that make a real difference. As a result, hers is the first salon business in the UK to be certified carbon neutral – an accolade she has held since 2019.

Along with salon Managing Director Keith Mellen, Anne is also the brains behind Salon Re:Source, a digital ‘toolkit’ created to educate stylists and salon owners on the actions they can take in order to become a more sustainable business. Available free of charge, it offers everything from easy, low-cost ‘baby steps’ to larger measures which require more considerable planning and investment.

Course co-creator Elaine Heslop is an Honorary Fellow at University of Glasgow and a sustainability consultant in the city of Oxford. As a client and long-time admirer of the salon’s sustainable ethos, Elaine was ‘proud’ to work with the duo, finding them ‘deeply inspiring’ both in terms of the salon and what they have achieved in leading change in the industry at large.

Anne Veck salon co-founder Keith Mellen said:

We were delighted to contribute to this insightful new course. I hope that the evolution of our business will inspire others to make changes that consider people and the planet, and to look at ways of introducing circular solutions into both their lives and their businesses.
