Sassoon Scholarship Winner Announced for 2019/20

Share

No one was a more dedicated proponent of equal hairdressing education than Vidal Sassoon, which is why the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s scholarship in his name provides the opportunity for one talented stylist to learn from one of the leading groups in hairdressing, in the educational experience of a lifetime.

Each year, the Sassoon Academy provides a scholarship to one lucky member of the Fellowship. Although applications are open to all, it’s a brilliant opportunity for stylists from salons with little or no education budget to be exposed to some of the most acclaimed training available in the industry. The successful stylist enjoys a year of unparalleled education from Sassoon, providing them with a brilliant technical basis from which to grow their career. They are permitted to choose up to four separate week-long courses, meaning that education can be entirely tailored to their own career goals.

They also receive a toolkit from Denman, meaning they’re fully equipped to get started and take what they’ve learned back to the salon, prepped with all the kit they need. Denman also covers £50 of travel expenses for each session, ensuring that even those based outside of London have a fair opportunity to enter. This year saw more than 20 applicants enter for the Scholarship, with a panel of judges primed to interview them about their lives, careers and aspirations.

On the panel were:

  • Edward Darley, Sassoon
  • Martyn Wady, Denman
  • Laura Husband, HJ
  • Megan Danskine, Professional Hairdresser
  • Ashleigh Hodges, Fellowship Chancellor

After a day of interviews, they decided on Niamh Morris as their worthy winner. Ashleigh Hodges said,

I was so blown away by the amount and standard of applicants this year for the Sassoon scholarship. Everyone was so awesome and very deserving in their own way, and it’s always so hard for the judges to pick only one. It’s such a fantastic initiative and something that can truly develop an individual’s career as well as those around them. This year’s winner really deserves this opportunity and I can’t wait to see her grow from it.

As well as receiving the Sassoon Scholarship, Niamh also started the week with an inspiring presentation at the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Members’ Night, where she worked alongside her colleagues to present three models. With her new education and ongoing commitment to the Fellowship, Niamh is now on track to develop both her technical skills and industry profile – we can’t wait to see what she does next!
