Shaping Futures Heads to the Philippines

Share

Shaping Futures, Schwarzkopf Professional’s charitable initiative which supports vulnerable young people by teaching them the life skills of hairdressing, is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, as it prepares to return to the Philippines in April with a new group of UK volunteers.

The intrepid group of hairdressers will spend the next two months fundraising and preparing for the trip of a lifetime. The group will travel to Lipa City, outside the country’s capital Manila, to teach up to 25 young people the life skills of hairdressing. Commenting on the forthcoming trip, Janet Maitland, UK Ambassador for Shaping Futures,  said,

We’re over the moon to be heading back to the Philippines and cannot wait to start teaching these incredible young people the skills which will change their lives. Last year was our first Shaping Futures trip to the country and we were blown away by the dedication each student showed to their studies and the respect they had for hairdressing as a career. Every student who took part in the 2018 initiative was offered a training or employment contract through David’s Salons, a multi-salon business which operates across the Philippines, and we’re hoping for the same again this year.

Departing the UK on the 15th April, the group will spend a total of six weeks teaching the young people the essentials of hairdressing; from cutting and colouring through to styling. Each pair of volunteers will spend two weeks teaching, before handing over to the next.

Speaking of Shaping Futures, Schwarzkopf Professional’s Kay Brady said,

Shaping Futures was launched ten years ago to give disadvantaged young people a second chance at life. We know that hairdressing is a skill you acquire for life and by teaching these young people, who have experienced poverty and loss, we are able to transform their lives for the absolute better. Thanks to SOS Children’s Villages and David’s Salons for partnering with us,  we cannot wait for the 2019 Shaping Futures year to start!

The group will have their first training session in Durham on 4th March, where they’ll get to meet each other for the first time.

Shaping Futures is a global initiative run by Schwarzkopf Professional and supported by the Fritz Henkel Stiftung. Each year volunteer hairdressers from across the globe are partnered with SOS Children’s Villages where they spend several weeks transforming the lives of disadvantaged young people through hairdressing.
