The winners of the Hair Council Student of the Year, in association with L’Oreal Professionnel and VTCT, have been announced.

Following a photographic competition judged by Patrick Cameron, Andrew Barton and Jamie Stevens, eight Level 2 and eight Level 3 students contested the final. The practical took place at L'Oréal Studios in Hammersmith where the finalists had to recreate their original photographic look. The competition was judged by Southern Hairdresser of the Year, Anne Veck, Sean Hanna's Artistic Director and session stylist, Yesmin O'Brien, as well as Jayne Schauenburg, a previous winner herself and hairdressing educator.

The finalists were interviewed by Jayne Schauenburg, Yesmin O'Brien and Keith Conniford, CEO/Registrar of the Hair Council, and were asked about their work and the work of the Hair Council. Keith said,

I was amazed at the quality of work, commitment and passion for the industry that the youngsters showed, some as young as one year into their training! A truly wonderful day!

All 16 finalists received a goody bag packed to the brim with products and brushes from eleven different companies including Denman, L'Oreal Professional, Goldwell, KMS, ghd, Wella, Fudge, Affinage, Kerastase, Matrix, Pureology and Decleor.

Many congratulations to Liberty Clark from Francesco Group who won the Level 2 competition and to Jurgita Allen from Coleg Cambria who won the Level 3 competition. Jurgita was our Level 2 winner for 2016 and for the first time ever we have someone who has won the competition two years in a row.

It was so exciting to win! I really enjoyed the day and am still over the moon that I won. I’m looking forward to being able to promote myself with a new title and show off my beautiful little trophy. With the encouragement and advice I got from the judges afterwards I’m planning to do the best I can with some new knowledge and connections. I’ll be looking out for updates on the Hair Council’s progress and am truly inspired to become a part of it in the future. Liberty Clark, Level 2 winner.

I am so proud and pleased to have won the Hair Council Student of the Year for the second year in a row! This last year has opened so many opportunities and has enabled me to grow as a stylist and as a person. I am proud to use SRH after my name and have so much more awareness of the importance of state registration which I have been promoting with my college, work place and on social media. I am looking forward to the year ahead and the opportunities that may arise from winning this amazing competition again. Jurgita Allen, Level 3 winner.

The winners will receive a day shadowing celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton and a career guided lunch with Sophia Hilton, as well as afternoon tea at the House of Commons.
