The Success Keeps on Rolling for The Hairbank

2014 has truly been an amazing year so far for Laura and Ria Kulik, and the team at Urmston’s longest standing luxury salon, The Hairbank. The pair has recently set a record for becoming the first mother-daughter team in the 30 year history of the British Hairdressing Awards to receive two nominations in one year. Not only have Laura and Ria been shortlisted for Northwestern Hairdressers of the Year, but the entire salon team have also reached the final round of nominations for British Salon Team of the Year.

How it all started….

Laura Kulik is proud to have followed in her grandmother’s footsteps, who was an inspired hairdresser herself and worked until the grand age of 85. Laura says,

I grew up surrounded by hairdressing and visited my granny’s salon every day, watching in amazement and passing the pins as she created amazing up dos. I knew from a young age that I never wanted to do anything else. I opened my own salon at the very young age of 22 and have enjoyed every minute of the journey, growing the business from a small hairdresser’s to one of the best salons in Manchester!

It's the kind of career that is never boring as there is always something new to learn and new skills to be gained. My personal goal for the future is to enter the hairdressing hall of fame by becoming a judge of one of the industry’s most prestigious awards. I also hope to continue to inspire brilliant young hairdressers and show young people what an exciting career hairdressing can be.

Ria Kulik is happy to be the third generation of hairdressers in her family. Ria says,

I have always found my mother’s work fascinating, and after leaving school I was sure that this is the career path I wanted to follow. I got to work straight away and quickly rose through the ranks to become a Matrix educator and colour and cutting master. I now take an active part in planning and am excited to help the business move forward.

Laura and Ria began working on photo shoots as a hobby; they loved the creative buzz behind executing a photo shoot and the chance to see their work immortalised in beautiful professional photographs. Their natural flair for styling meant that they quickly made a name for themselves as session stylists, and have since worked with over 30 magazines, including the prestigious Italian Vogue, on a variety of campaigns.

Last year The Hairbank was relocated to a larger site in Urmston, taking over an old bank building (unfortunately without the money in it!). Their new location boasts over 160sqm in floor space, meaning that Laura and Ria can continue to grow the salon’s clientele.

Recent Achievements:

  • Winning Best Salon 2014 at the English Hair and Beauty Awards
  • Laura and Ria have both been finalists in the UK Extensionist of the Year award for two years running
  • Working on live TV with Gok Wan as part of X-Factor contestant Jamie Stevens’ team
  • Taking part in hair shows with the Matrix, Alan Howard and Balmain
  • Laura and Ria were both finalists in the Matrix Destination Fame competition 2014

Laura and Ria say,

We really love working together and believe that we are able to balance each others strengths and weaknesses, bringing both experience and a youthful perspective to our work here at The Hairbank. We relish the challenge of each day and are thrilled to have such a close, talented team of staff with us on this journey.
