2020 is a year best forgotten, but its legacy has left an indelible mark across all areas of life - from our love of comfort dressing to the embrace of make-up-free (or the appearance of) skin, it is hardly surprising that the hair industry has also been impacted.

Here are five looks that are set to dominate 2021, all of which can be attributed to the happenings of 2020:

The Mullet-inspired Shag

Pioneered by Miley Cyrus, the mullet is the modern iteration of the shaggy style that has been growing in popularity. This anomaly of a cut is characterized by layers, rather than length. Not for the faint of heart, but if done right, it can look amazing on virtually any hair texture, with or without bangs, and the cropped layers give your hair instant texture and cool-girl factor.

60s-style bangs

Straight across bangs or eyelash-grazing fringe a la 60’s icons Brigette Bardot and Jane Birkin, this soft style offers a perfectly graceful grow-out phase, and when paired with soft layers around the face, it will draw attention directly to the eyes – ideal when you are wearing a mask!

Undone Bob

This year, low maintenance is high on the agenda, ensuring bobs will be everywhere, with the look interpreted to channel your personal style. Straight and glossy, beach babe waves or a French-girl grunge vibe, anything goes.

Experimental Colour

While balayage has become the go-to, for those wanting to push the boundaries of colour, now is your chance! Unexpected, bold shades such as pink or neon green (think Billie Eilish) look incredibly striking peeking out between naturally coloured strands. A word of wisdom for colour virgins, pink highlights are one of the easiest shades to channel this trend as the colour compliments many skin tones and will look flattering as it fades.

Hair Health

Perhaps it was because 2020 was the first time stress-induced hair loss became prevalent for some people or perhaps it was because salon visits were skipped due to lockdown, but whichever reason, 2021 clutch of best-selling products will be focused on hair health, and unsurprisingly, Olaplex tops this list. It is, however, important to remember that you should focus not just on your hair but your scalp too. Giving your scalp a little TLC can help prevent dryness, flaking, and can even promote shinier hair.
