Whether you're new to hair extensions or have used them in the past, it is always a good idea to refresh your memory on how to properly take care of them.

It is important to get into a good routine with your hair extensions and extension specialist from the start because good habits equal longer lasting extensions. With regular care and attention, you can ensure your hair extensions last as long as possible and stay looking healthy. Clip-ins, tape-ins, L.A weaves, fusion, micro/nano ring… what does it all mean? There are so many different styles of extensions and terms, that it can get overwhelming if you are new to the world of hair extensions. So, get comfortable, tie your hair back, and get educated on everything you need to know right here by the team at M-A Hairdressing.

So, to begin with let us talk clip-Ins! These come attached to a fabric weft and are secured to your hair by clips (it pretty much says it in the name)! If you are looking for a less maintenance hair extension, then clip-ins are the ones for you. Clip-in's need to be applied regularly and removed with care, usually last 3-6 months and only need to be washed every 10-15 wears.

Tape hair extensions are a semi-permanent hair extension method that usually lasts around 6-8 weeks but can be maintained up to 10 weeks before needing adjustments. These extensions lay flat to the head creating a more permanent, yet less bulky finish oppose to clip in extensions. Our salon guests favour this method for a quick and easy application with less time and for their natural-looking finish giving you longer fuller looking hair in literally minutes.

As a fast-growing trend The LA Weave is a notch up from the traditional 'weave' we know. The LA Weave is applied by stitching strong hair cotton along the track and in between hiding Micro Rings to give a nice discreet look with strength. This technique is perfect for many hair types, but coarse hair is preferable.

Fusion extensions are another word for pre-bonded extensions. this method is created by using a high-grade keratin bond which attach to strands of the hair, each bond size depends on the hair structure, texture, and density and stylist experience. This process uses a heating element which helps to melt the keratin bond for the use of fusing to the hair. Human hair is 95% keratin based which means, the fusion method is safe, comfortable, and long-lasting giving you up to 3/4 months of wear depending on your growth cycle and professional advice been taken.

Nano ring hair extensions involve placing individual small sections of hair and securing them with a metal or elastic nano ring tip. The nano ring itself is tiny and 90% smaller than a traditional micro ring, which is why we believe this is more suitable for those with finer hair. As the hair is applied individually like the fusion technique, hair extensions grow freely with your own hair. Hair can be worn up, however micro rings may be visible depending on your hair type, your colour, and extension placement.

Q&A

What homecare should I use?

Your extension specialist will go through all your aftercare advice as part of your consultation pre and post application, however; 9/10 we always favour and recommend Nioxin to help strengthen the hair during the use of extensions which help prevent hair breakage and create volume and can be purchased within your salon appointment. Please note, we strongly recommend not using plex products that contain too much protein on a regular basis as this can create brittle, dry and unmanageable hair causing knotting and breakage.

Can I use Sebastian products?

Of course, we offer a luxury homecare set which is the perfect gift or accompaniment for extensions for £55.95. This kit consists of Sebastian Trilliance Shampoo and Conditioner, Wella Light Oil, and our favourite hair detangler brush.

Will extensions ruin my hair?

The correct answer to this question is, no. Hair extensions will not damage your hair if they are fitted professionally and are well cared for taking all the advice and aftercare given from your specialist.

Do you charge for a consultation?

At M-A Salons we give you a rundown of care and cost during your pre-consultation. The consultation is so in depth we charge £24.95 for half an hour appointment with our specialist which is added as credit on your account for 2 months as a down payment. If you choose extensions aren’t for you that's fine too but the amount is still chargeable for our time.

Will my extensions fall out?

Hair extensions can loosen with time, however with a maintenance programme the hair shouldn’t remove easily. If your new to extensions, you may encounter a few loose extensions within the first weeks due to been to heavy handed. Using incorrect aftercare can aid in the loosening of extensions depending on method.

Can I remove hair extensions at home?

We strongly advise you do not attempt to remove your extensions at home. The damage you may cause to your own hair can be detrimental and, in some cases, can put you off future applications causing you to believe the extensions have ruined your hair.
