Calvin Luo

Session Stylist: Matthew Curtis

Calvin Luo’s spring collection had a rebellious spirit within its minimally deconstructed silhouettes.

Step-by-step

Hair was a mix of hair down and up-styles, with a common theme of centre partings and dishevelled texture at the front.

Hair down...

1. Rough dry hair in sections for a naturally textured finish

2. Centre part hair with the end of a tail comb

3. Tong lengths then brush out for dishevelled texture

4. Pull front sections loose, tong and manipulate around the face for an undone, rebellious look

Hair-up...

1. Centre part hair with the end of a tail comb

2. Pull haphazardly from centre part into a low height ponytail

3. Twist the ponytail so that it begins to coil into itself; pin the head allowing ends to stick out of the bun

4. Pull front sections loose, tong and manipulate around the face for an undone, rebellious look

Inspired by a vague memory from an animated series that Fadel (the designer) used to watch as a child. He was amazed by the main character, a very enigmatic, curious, feminine and smart girl who used to fight for equality and justice. Agatha’s femininity is represented by the different flower-inspired shapes visible in this collection. The enigmatic aura of Agatha is also represented by beautifully crafted high collars.

Step-by-step

A mix of nape-of-the-neck bobs and loose hair down. The common theme was centre partings and a mirror-shine finish.

Hair down...

1. Blow-dry hair in sections for a smooth, sleek finish

2. Centre part hair with the end of a tail comb

3. Apply cool hair against flats of head for a mirror-shine finish

4. Run straightening tongs through hair lengths

5. Tuck front sections of hair behind the ears and finish with plenty of shine spray

Hair-up...

1. Centre part hair with the end of a tail comb

2. Pull and smooth hair back from the centre part into a low height ponytail

3. Twist the ponytail lightly so that it begins to coil into itself; pin very closely into the head

4. Use a soft bristle brush to smooth down sides and finish with plenty of shine spray

A romantic influence with a nod to Victoriana and ultra feminine details.

Step-by-step

The hair inspiration was romance and beautiful, with the right amount of modern cool girl texture.

1. Start at the nape of the neck and taking a large section of the hair, feed it through straighteners, starting at the root and bending the hair into an ‘S’ shape as you carry on towards the ends

2. Repeat this all the way up to the top of the head

3. Spray a texturizing spray throughout the hair and shake out the waves
