Sean McElhill, Co-Director of S J Forbes, reveals his top men’s trends of spring/summer 2017.

The Kinks

Curls are a big trend for S/S17. Whether locks are worn short and neat with soft textures, as they were at Christopher Raeburn, or whether hair has been styled long and loose, as seen at Ports 1961, the new season is all about enhancing the natural curves within your hair. A volumising mousse applied to damp hair will help to enhance natural kinks, while a diffuser attachment will give natural curls an added boost, for a softly tousled curly look.

Forget me Knots

One of my favourite looks of the S/S17 shows – and one I predict will be hugely popular – was the messy man bun. The male models on the Agi & Sam runway had their voluminous hair styled into low, untidy buns that sat at the nape of their necks. This seriously cool style can be worn in so many ways. Top knot, half-up and messy are styles that men can rock easily.

Straight from the Part

The centre parting led the way for the sleek style of choice, shown on almost every catwalk from hanging loose with natural texture at Ports 1961, worn with feathered, face-framing curls at Prada and big and bouncy and full of volume at JW Anderson. This is a look that’s sure to be a hit with high-maintenance men, whose style and lifestyle require a sleeker alternative to the more edgy trends set to be everywhere else this coming season.
