Everything you need to know about two of the most popular tweakment options!
This year, Polynucleotides have emerged as an alternative to traditional dermal fillers, offering a different approach to skin rejuvenation. While dermal fillers focus on adding volume and filling lines for immediate, visible results, Polynucleotides work at a deeper, cellular level. We spoke with Dr. Emily Mehta, Chief Medical Director for Harley Academy and a co-founder of STORY Clinics, to discuss the two treatments in more detail.
“Polynucleotides are highly purified DNA fragments from fish origin (aka Kim Kardashians salmon sperm facial!) and they improve skin quality rather than add volume like Dermal Fillers. Think of Polynucleotides as a skin treatment, as you would a laser or a skin cream. Yes, you inject them, but they are completely different to fillers and do not ‘fill’ at all. They also do not pose some of the rare but potentially serious risks associated with fillers such as skin necrosis. Polynucleotides are an all-rounder when it comes to skin benefits - they boost collagen, improve blood flow and help ageing skin to repair and thicken. With Polynucleotides the results are more gradual, with at least three sessions needed,” says Dr. Mehta.
Moving over to Dermal Fillers, Dr. Mehta explains that they are, “hyaluronic acid-based biodegradable injectables that add volume, smooth the skin and can reduce signs of ageing, with the results often being immediate and long lasting. The benefits of Dermal Fillers are that they are one treatment, (compared to Polynucleotides which are typically three sessions) with minimal recovery time and effects lasting from one-to-many years.”
The Final Verdict:
“Both can give fantastic results, and the good news is that the two treatments are not only compatible but are synergistic; for many people having both treatment types sequentially will give by far the best long-term results. However, as they do not do the same thing, directly comparing them isn't a good idea without a thorough assessment from your aesthetic doctor, who can assess your needs and advise you in the right direction.”
