When you’re busy it’s easy to get bogged down with the daily grind and non-essential business.
But according to salon owner and founder of the Sean Hanna Consultancy, Sean Hanna, this can be damaging to your business. “As the salon owner it is important to be strategic and effective and not get distracted,” Sean says. “To keep on track and save time, make a quick list of things you think you need to do; ask the question if this is genuinely going to help your business, how important is it? So do the important stuff first – and if you think everything is of equal importance, look again as this is simply not true.”
Being busy doesn’t necessarily help you grow your business. “Being effective helps you grow your business,” Sean explains.” It’s amazing how many people are super busy but get to the end of the day and can’t really tell you how they have impacted their business.”
As a salon owner, one of the most time-impacting events in your day can be running meetings, so here are some good time-saving ideas from Sean:
- If you work on the salon floor, book meetings first thing in the morning before you start working on clients. A one-hour meeting from 9-10am takes an hour, but booking an hour in the middle of a client column will often eat up way more time.
- In meetings give people an end time. If it’s a meeting with a rep or a team member, let them know that the meeting is from 9-9.40am. This keeps everyone focused and stops meetings just drifting on.
- Always set an agenda and stick to it.
- A short meeting can be done standing, which also helps keep people focused. Obviously, there are times when you want to create a long, slow, relaxed atmosphere with lots of pre-ample and chit-chat, but make it a conscious decision. I WANT this to be a short meeting, or I WANT this to be a long, casual meeting.
