Skincare Tips for Men

Share

When it comes to skincare, men tend to keep it simple.

However, there is a rise in men pursuing healthier, younger-looking skin, making it the ideal time to update your skincare routine.

Below, we give our top tips on how you can develop a healthy skincare routine…

Know your skin type

The first step is knowing your skin type. This will help you select the right products for your skin:

  • Sensitive skin tends to burn or sting after product use.
  • Normal skin tends to be clear and not sensitive.
  • Dry skin is often flaky, itchy, and rough.
  • Oily skin is shiny and greasy.
  • Combination skin is dry in some areas and oily in others.

Now you know your skin type, make sure you check the labels when selecting your products. For example, if you have oily, acne-prone skin, look for cleansers and moisturizers that say oil free or non-comedogenic, as these will not clog your pores. If you have sensitive skin, look for products that are fragrance-free, as fragrances can cause further irritation to the skin.

Keep it clean

Wash your face daily and after exercise using a mild facial cleanser and lukewarm water – not hot water!

Close shave

Multi-blade razors can work well for most men or cut too close to the skin for others. If when you shave you experience razor bumps, burns or ingrown hairs, use a single or double blade razor instead – and never stretch your skin taut when shaving. Before shaving, wet your skin and hair to soften it. Use a shaving cream and shave in the direction of hair growth. Rinse your razor after each swipe and change the blade after five to seven shaves to minimize irritation.

Add moisture

Moisturiser works by trapping water in your skin, which can help to reduce fine lines and make your skin look brighter and younger. Apply moisturiser after washing or shaving while the skin is damp.

Keep it blocked

Wearing a sunscreen is a must for all skin types. Sunscreen prevents sun damage that can lead to wrinkles, age spots and even skin cancer. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of skin whenever outdoors, including the scalp, ears, neck and lips.

Every man’s skin is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to skincare. If you are in doubt about which products work best for you, then find and book into a salon here and speak to a professional on how best to care for your skin.
