The Impact of Stress on Your Scalp

Share

The effects that stress can have on the body are numerous - from skin conditions to irritable bowels and more. But stress can also have a big impact on your hair and scalp.

When we are stressed our cortisone levels increase, and this can wreak havoc on our hair follicles. Stress can also cause excess oil production, and a flaky and itchy scalp. Even more reason to start taking our mental health seriously!

Below, we give some quick tips to help you ease the stress on your scalp…

Be mindful of your habits

Instead of applying any old product to your scalp, be more mindful of what you use. Try using a scalp rejuvenating serum that is infused with vitamins to help keep your follicles in balance. We love Hair Ritual by Sisley Revitalising Fortifying Serum (£144). When it comes to shampoo and conditioner, we recommend Philip Kingsley, created by trichologists, there is a range to suit every scalp’s need.

Another great product to try is a cleansing oil – great for aiding cellular turnover and to get the blood circulating. We love Aveda’s Pramasana Scalp Cleanser (£24), beautifully holistic, it is the ultimate cleanser to keep your scalp fighting fit.

You are what you eat

It is no secret that by improving the nutrients that you feed your body, this radiates externally. For great skin and scalp, make sure you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables – especially dark leafy greens – and cut back on red meat, sodium, caffeine, and sugar.

Enjoy the moment

Meditation is great for reducing anxiety and relaxing your brain. But not everyone can sit quietly focussing on their breath. So, if you struggle with meditation, try a method that works for you, such as listening to your favourite music, being creative, or carrying out an activity you enjoy – anything that gets you to slow down and enjoy the moment you are in.
