The Return of the Rachel by Pastels Salon Dubai

Share

Layers have taken a bit of a backseat in recent years, with blunt cuts and choppy bobs leading the forefront of on-trend hair but this season that is all set to change, say the expert hair team at Pastels Salon Jumeirah.

Arguably, one of the stand-out stars from the still-popular show Friends, was The Rachel. Defined by choppy layers, the hairstyle propelled Jennifer Aniston into one of a clutch of modern-day hair icons, and as the 90s are enjoying a fashion moment (hello, fuchsia pink!), it’s unsurprising that the style is experiencing somewhat of a resurgence.

Currently ubiquitous amongst LA’s finest, the style has been seen on multiple celebrities -from GenZ icons such as Hailey Bieber and Kaia Gerber to Jennifer Lopez, and even Aniston herself is embracing the trend, albeit with a modern twist.

In TikTok circles, given its contemporary update, it’s been dubbed the octopus thanks to its array of choppy layers – and it’s set to replace other layered styles namely the shag and mullet as the layered style du jour. The key to this latest incarnation of The Rachel is the layering. Created with shorter layers throughout the front and concave, short to long layers throughout the back, certain interpretations also feature bangs, either curtain style that hit above the brow, or a longer, cheek-grazing fringe.

Edgy, shaggy, and effortless, with cool-girl vibes, this layered cut is more bespoke, considering different hair types and textures, unlike its 90s predecessor. Beware though, as effortless as it seems, it does not suit all hair types. It is best suited to naturally smooth or slightly wavy hair, rather than fine and straight hair. The clever addition of highlights around the face will create dimension and add depth to the hair, enhancing the style beautifully.
