As shorter hair continues to be popular for AW24, there are a few things to consider before taking the plunge.
HOB Academy head of education, Jake Unger says there’s a shorter hairstyle to suit everyone, “You want your client’s new haircut to have the wow factor - the first wow factor is an involuntary reaction if something looks incredible. Then there are three key ingredients to achieve ‘wow’: suitability, execution and fashionable, each component just as important as each other to achieve the desired reaction.”
Suitability
Based on face shape, body shape and lifestyle. Be careful not to pigeonhole certain face shapes with particular haircuts; some people say you shouldn’t have a bob with a round face shape, this isn’t completely true, it all depends on the length chosen and if you create volume or slim the shape. It’s about studying the face shape and complementing or hiding some features.
Execution
You may have found a haircut that suits all the above, the next important aspect is ensuring it’s done well. A haircut may suit the client, but if it is executed badly then it’s never going to look great. Be sure to continually update your skill set through education providers. The key is always progressing your fundamental techniques as you can mix and match to create new trends.
Fashionable
Staying relevant to what is in fashion is key to have your haircuts looking wow. Even if you have a haircut that suits your client and is cut well, if it is not fashionable or ‘unfashionable’ then it’s not going to look great. Be proud to be part of the fashion industry, with your finger constantly on the button with organic research. Keeping tabs on what’s happening on the catwalk is essential to your personal growth as well and keeping your clients coming back for more.
