With searches for #hairtransformation topping 2 million on TikTok, showcasing your work has never been more important.
Trend setter and evo International Creative Colour Director, Tom Smith says hair transformations should be a part of every hairdresser’s social strategy, giving clients a glimpse into steps and skills to get the look.
“In a world where we are encouraged to be our own ‘main character’ showcasing an immediate change of identity is aspiration, inspirational and exciting,” he explains. “It allows the viewer to live vicariously through the boldness of another while providing creative inspiration for a potential future change of their own, either as a hairstylist or a client.
“For a while reels have been getting shorter and shorter. My advice to make a hair transformation eye-catching is only include the essential steps, and just one example of each step: no repetition, even down to showing brush strokes of application. Keep clips moving fast to retain the audience’s attention.”
Tom’s top tips for showcasing successful hair transformations
- Always show a clear before and after in clear and bright lighting. I always like to use the same lighting in the before as the after to showcase an honest comparison.
- Build up to the result by showing glimpses of the changes but keep the full reveal to the very last second. Not showing the after for too long will encourage the viewer to watch it twice, which is great for your algorithm.
- If your audience is hairdressers then always share formulas, as these build trust and community. Talk about the products you’re using and detail the tones and application process.
- If you want to attract clients, share details about the aftercare, homecare and maintenance to make it relatable and helpful. I talk about evo products they can use at home to get the look they want, with some expert advice to getting the most from their product regime.
