The New Normal: Julie Powell
With the lockdown now lifted in Dubai, we wanted to catch-up with some of our Good Salon Guide UAE salon owners to see how they are dealing with salon life after lockdown. Here, we caught up with Julie Powell of Great Lengths Salon, Al Wasl Dubai.
Julie, how are your team and clients managing the current phase of return to work process?
Whilst we are extremely excited to be back at work after five weeks, it is not without its challenges.
Following the new government guidelines we operate at 30% staffing, with reduced working hours and follow a strict protocol that includes specialist disinfectant processes, PPE for staff and clients, restrictions on access to common and retail areas, and social distancing from colleagues. Rules require 2 metres separation, but Great Lengths Dubai are operating on at least 4 metres, we utilise only 4 of 16 chairs.
Juggling appointments in this first week proved challenging, as we cannot offer all our services and the additional pressure leaves you very tired by the end of the day, but this is balanced by the wonderful experience of taking care of our clients, many of them friends after years with us.
They are so happy to be out of the house, even happier to have us fix their roots and re-apply their extensions. Clients are extremely appreciative, and I have received more thank you texts and WhatsApp messages than ever before - I have rediscovered just how much I love my work.
