What Are These Ridges On My Nails?

Hi there,

I have a quick question about the health of my nails! I have noticed lately that after I remove my nail polish, my nails feel terrible and have these horrible ridges to them. They used to be so smooth, but now they just feel all bumpy!!

What would be causing these ridges and what can I do about them please?

Thanks so much,

Hollie, Poole

Hi Hollie!

Thank you for your question and I’m here to help! So, ridges in the nails can often be a normal sign of ageing. They are very common as we get older. Slight vertical ridges commonly develop in older adults. In some cases, this could be a sign of health problems like vitamin deficiencies or diabetes.

However, severe and raised ridges can be a sign of iron deficiency anemia. Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin B12 or keratin can result in fingernail ridges.

To reduce the look and feel of the ridges on the nail plate, the best thing to do is lightly buff over the nail and the free edge. Apply a layer of nail strengthening treatment - I highly recommend Nail Magic (available on my online shop). Finishing off with some cuticle oil and hand cream.

Hope this helps,
