Are My Braids Causing Hair Loss?
Hi there, I wondered if you could give me some advice? I have long Afro hair that I sometimes wear in braids, but I am starting to notice hair loss. I don’t wear the braids that tight, but could this style be causing my hair loss, or could it be another underlying problem? I am 32 and in good health, so I am very concerned about my hair and want to prevent any hair loss going forward.
Thank you for your time!

Hi Cynthia,
Is this happening in certain areas or all over. Traction alopecia can be a result of hair loss from braids due to tension being applied repeatedly to the scalp. Although your braids don’t feel tight to you the tension applied can be enough to cause hair loss, especially around the hairline. If it is coming from all areas of the head do remember that you lose up to 100 strands of hair a day and if you wear braids those strands will be stuck in the braids until released so you will see a lot of shedding when braids are taken out.
Try to have regular breaks in between braids and change the braiding pattern and size to balance the tension.
