Working in the UAE

Nikki Weston-Grant of Good Salon Guide UAE, recently caught up with Ruksher Malik - owner of Pastels Salons - to quiz her on international recruitment in Dubai to help inform interested candidates from around the world who would like to work in another country but have reservations.

Ruksher, how will it benefit me to apply for work in a salon in Dubai?

Dubai is a multicultural city unlike any other - it is a perfect blend between Eastern and Western cultures that offers the best of both worlds. This means that you get unrivalled access to a wide range of nationalities, both in terms of a diverse client list and working with different nationalities. Given this international clientele, you get the opportunity to hone and broaden your skills as you work on different types of hair.

A good Dubai salon offers terrific training opportunities, and given the city’s current popularity with illustrious fashion designers such as Dior and Dolce & Gabbana, you can find yourself backstage at high-profile fashion shows, as well as working on editorial features, photoshoots and videos for titles such as Harper’s Bazaar Arabia and Vogue Arabia.

As L’Oreal’s premium partner in Dubai, our salon is used as a litmus test for the Middle East market and each year we create an in-house photoshoot sponsored by them, which has featured in hair industry bibles such as Hairdresser’s Journal and HAIR UK.
As a city, Dubai has a lot to attract people to its shores – there is a wonderful lifestyle on offer here with year-round sunshine and given its global location, it is a perfect base for those who love to travel and explore new countries and cultures.

Is it easy to transfer my current skills?

Very easy indeed. The qualifications you have gained in your home country that distinguish you as a trained hairstylist are recognised in Dubai.

What is the process if I apply for a position?

First of all, you need to send your CV. Then we will organise a trade test and if we have a vacancy and your trade test is successful, we will send you a contract and organise a visa for you so you can become part of the Pastels’ team!
