Skin and Scalp Testing - The Process

We asked L’Oreal Professionel for their advice on skin and scalp testing, and like other colour manufacturers they have produced their own guidelines for you and your client’s safety. We have reproduced a summary here for you.

However if you need further information please contact your colour manufacturer directly.

3-Step Professional Safety Consultation

STEP 1: Consultation – Create a record card to record client history.

Has your client had any allergic reactions to hair colourant products?

YES      →       STOP!

Has your client had any allergic reactions to a tattoo or permanent make up?

 YES      →      STOP!

Does your client have a sensitive, itchy or damaged scalp?

YES      →      STOP!

Carry out a skin allergy test if the answer to any of the questions below is YES:

  • Is this a new colour client for your salon?
  • Has it been more than six months since your client last had a colour in your salon?
  • Is it more than 12 months since your client’s last allergy test?
  • Has your client had a tattoo or permanent make-up since their last colour?
  • Has your client had any allergic reaction since their last colour?

STEP 2: How to carry out a skin allergy test

  1. Remove earrings
  2. Behind the ear, using a cotton bud, apply a little of the unmixed product to cover about 1 square centimetre
  3. Reapply 2 or 3 times allowing it to dry between each application
  4. Leave for 48 hours without washing, covering or touching
  5. If the client or you notice any abnormal reactions such as reddening, itching or swelling, do not apply the colour and advise them to seek medical advice before further colour applications are made
  6. If after 48 hours the test remains negative, you can apply the colour

STEP 3: Apply the colour

  • Read the product leaflet and follow the instructions exactly
  • Wear disposable gloves
  • Avoid contact with eyes

In case of a reaction during application, rinse immediately and discontinue use - STOP!

In case of shortness of breath, seek immediate medical attention - STOP!
