Even the most famous hairdressers started as salon juniors and our college offers exactly the right study programmes to help you succeed in this rewarding, creative and fast-moving career.

A career in hairdressing could open the door to a glamorous world which involves looking after the hair of celebrities, preparing actors and models for film, stage and photo shoots, working as an image consultant or even setting up a chain of salons and developing a range of products. 

You could also choose to work as a stylist in a salon or as a salon manager, or you could specialise as a colour technician or become a freelance hairdresser (this is a great option if you want to be self-employed or eventually start your own business). Or you might choose to work on a cruise ship or go into teaching. 

Whatever your area of interest or level of ambition, with hard work and the right training our range of study programmes and courses can help you get there. And a qualification in hairdressing guarantees job mobility, so you will always be in demand.



Entry Level 3/Level 1 - Hair and Beauty - Perfect if you want to learn skills needed to start your hair and beauty career.

You will learn how to care for your own personal hygiene and grooming. You will develop techniques to care for yourself and gain an understanding of hair, beauty and hygiene products.

This course will teach you a broad range of practical hair and beauty skills and techniques involved in creating a total look. You will also have the opportunity to select from a range of technical optional units including: personal care and hygiene, paint your own nails, care for your own skin, care for your own hands, apply your own make-up, blow-dry and finish your own hair, and shampoo and condition your own hair.

Also included in the optional section of this course are units that support learners practical work such as; introduction to the hair and beauty sector, care and hygiene in the salon and communication skills.

Our Progression Curriculum Study Programme has been designed in such a way that if you are not sure which vocational area you would like to study in, you will have the chance to move and sample a different area at various points in the year. You will work towards external accreditation in employability skills and a vocational qualification. This study programme will include English and maths at an appropriate level, and it will support the development of skills towards employability and suitability to progress on to the next level of study.

Requirements - There are no formal entry requirements for this study programme, however a keen interest in the subject is vital.

Assessment - You will learn through practical demonstrations, and assessment will be through written work and online tests.

Fees and Costs - If you are 16-18yrs old at the start of the Study Programme, it will be free. There may be additional payments required for trips, visits and other materials. For adult learners (over 19) financial support towards the costs of your Study Programme may be available. Eligible students may be able to get help with course related costs such as travel, equipment and childcare.

Opportunities - On successful completion you could progress onto our Level 2 programme.

Weekly Hours - 15 hours per week


Level 3 - Hairdressing (Part Time) - Perfect if you want to develop your skills and learn more specialised hair services in order to work as a senior.

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies allows you to expand your skills and knowledge you already posses by monitoring the health and safety in the salon for your colleagues and your clients, supporting colleagues with their consultations and promote services and products to your clients. You will also learn how to develop a variety of looks using advanced cutting techniques and increase your ability to style and dress your client’s hair. You will also increase your knowledge on colouring products and techniques, bridal hairstyling and perming.

Requirements - You will need to have completed a Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Hairdressing or equivalent. You will also need a GCSE grade A-D in English. All candidates will be required to attend an interview prior to starting on the course.

Assessment - For each unit the following will need to be completed:

  • A written assignment
  • A variety of practical assessments
  • One exam
  • Fees and Costs

Opportunities - On successful completion you could gain employment within the hairdressing industry in salons on cruise ships or you could become a self-employed hairdresser.

Weekly Hours - This course will take place on a Thursday (2.30pm - 9pm) during term time.


Level 2 - Hairdressing - Perfect if you want to learn the skills needed to work as a qualified Hairdresser.

You will learn how to conduct a thorough consultation prior to starting a service and understand how the choice of shampoos and conditioners can affect the hair and scalp. You will also cover cutting and colouring techniques needed to create amazing hairstyles. You can look forward to working in the college’s on-site salon on external clients.

Requirements - You will need a minimum of four GCSE at D grades or equivalent, including maths and English. Students may be able to progress from Level 1 vocationally related programmes.

Assessment - You will learn through practical demonstrations, and assessment will be through written work and online tests.

Fees and Costs - Additional expenses to consider may include:

  • Kits £100 (approx)
  • Uniform £60 (approx)
  • Commodities £30
  • Trip £ 30 (approx)

Opportunities - On successful completion you could progress on to our Level 3 programme or seek employment in hair salons or as a self-employed hairdresser.

Weekly Hours - 15 hours per week


Level 2 - Intermediate Apprenticeship - Hairdressing - Our apprenticeship in Hairdressing offers the opportunity to earn as you learn.

This is an 18 month course, with a one day per week day release to College. You will cover all aspects of hairdressing, shampooing, and blow-drying, setting, dressing, colouring, and cutting and reception duties. You will also select a variety of optional units to focus on areas of interest. You will have reviews every 10-12 weeks with an assessor to monitor progress. As part of the programme you will also study functional skills in Maths and English (you will be exempted if have you already have achieved a grade A-C in the past 5 years). You will also cover Employer Rights and Responsibilities?

Requirements - To undertake an apprenticeship you must first be employed. You will be required to have an interview and undertake an initial assessment. Ideally you will already have grades A-C in Maths and English.

Assessment - Assessment will be both on and off the job and will be through a variety of observations, oral questioning, online exams, assignments and coursework.

Fees and Costs - This course will be fully funded for 16-18yrs old. If you are 19+ a £500 employer contribution is required.

Opportunities - On completion of this qualification you can choose to undertake future study via a Level 3 Apprenticeship. Alternatively you may wish to seek employment as a junior hairstylist within a commercial salon.

Weekly Hours - Minimum 30 hours per week
