Celebrating 30 years in business in Blackrock, Aidan Fitzgerald remains at the forefront of the Irish hair care industry. With a distinguished reputation and a wealth of knowledge, Aidan has immersed himself in 'My New Hair', a service to patients who are suffering from cancer and medical hair loss.

Founded by leading international hair care expert Trevor Sorbie MBE following his sister-in-law's diagnosis with cancer, the 'My New Hair' programme has been designed to give hair professionals definitive training and education in dealing with the most vulnerable clients.

Aidan Fitzgerald is now part of an international network of over 300 professional hairdressers which includes Andrew Collinge, Guy Kremer, Charlie Miller, Charles Worthington and Umberto Giannini who are all offering the 'My New Hair' service. Having received intensive direction on working with and fitting wigs for clients, Aidan and his team provide women with a personalised and bespoke premium wig fitting service tailored to their needs and wants.

Unlike other hair loss treatments or wig suppliers this innovative initiative aims to restore the identity and confidence of a person experiencing medical hair loss. Speaking on the ‘My New Hair’ treatment, Aidan Fitzgerald said,

Prior to meeting with us, I advise all clients to send in before and after pictures. This works in giving a real sense of the individuality and personality of each person and helps us to ensure their journey through this transitional time is made as easy as possible.

Clients can expect a respectful, compassionate and professional consultation tailored to their individual needs. My team and I regularly attend workshops led by cancer nurses who improve our skills in dealing with sensitive and difficult situations.

The new hair is feather light in weight and comfortable to wear and comes with personal hairstyling and support by Aidan Fitzgerald in his Blackrock salon's private Wig Boutique. Both real hair and monofibre wigs are available, however most doctors would recommend the monofibre wigs as they are easy to care for, hold their style and require far less time in aftercare treatments. The monofibre wigs are also far more cost effective than real hair wigs with prices starting from €450.

One of the most traumatic parts of a cancer diagnosis can be hair loss and as a result Aidan recommends choosing a wig that will look just like your own hair. With a plethora of styles, warm shades, textures and lengths to choose from, Aidan works with each client to ensure their wig is suited perfectly to them.

Affiliated to the Irish Cancer Society of Ireland, a full consultation starts with a one-to-one meeting to get an insight into the individual’s personality and requirements. This is followed by a fitting, wig selection, trimming and aftercare treatment tips. Prices start from €50 for a half hour initial consultation or from €450 upwards for the complete service. This service is also part funded by the HSE and personal health insurance.

The Wig Boutique at Aidan Fitzgerald’s salon stocks an extensive choice of wigs with over a 1000 styles to choose from, along with a collection of bandanas, cotton caps, night caps and a range of false eyebrows.

In addition post chemotherapy colour services are available to those who have been given the go ahead from their doctor. Aidan uses the brand Organic Colour Systems as it contains natural proteins and vitamins certified by the Soil Association and Ecocert. It is also free from ammonia, parabens and napthol, and is safe to use on cancer patients who have had chemotherapy.
