Add Some TLC to Your Client’s Hair for 2023

Share

The start of a new year is the perfect time for your clients to plan a loving regime for their hair. As the hair expert, it’s your job to guide them and ensure they get the best from their tresses all year round.

British Hairdresser of the Year and Global Director at TONI&GUY, Cos Sakkas gives his top tips for helping your clients make 2023 the year of caring for their hair: “We all know the importance a good hair day makes on our mood and wellbeing, and as lives pick up speed after the festive break, it can be easy to pull hair into a top knot and forget about it. But with new hair habits and a little education, you can make sure their hair looks good and they feel great every day.”

Cos gives his tips for talking to clients about their hair for the year ahead…

Small details can make a big difference

Start the new year with a new look – but it doesn’t have to be dramatic. A small change can make a big difference to a regular style; add a fringe; change the parting; embrace the natural texture. Keep ahead of the trends and talk to them about making a small change.

Encourage regular trims

For those clients that like to keep their hair long, educate them why they need to make regular visits to you for a trim. Getting rid of split ends will help keep hair looking and feeling healthy and it will keep clients returning to you more regularly. Introduce something new every time they come and see you; just because hair is long doesn’t mean it can’t be exciting.

Demonstrate how to style hair at home

For clients who really can’t do without their hairdryers, straighteners, and tongs, show them how to use these tools most efficiently. More effective styling means the hair is exposed to heat for less time which is a definite bonus for hair health. Also reiterate the importance of using heat protection products and the art of air drying.

Introduce them to in-salon treatments

For their first visit after the New Year festivities, recommend a nourishing and detoxing hair treatment at the backwash. Those clients who have never experienced an in-salon treatment before will instantly see and feel a difference in their hair.

Recommend take-home treatments

Talk to them about their homecare regime and make sure they’re using the right products in between salon visits to keep their hair in tip-top condition.

Learn about food knowledge

If clients are starting a New Year diet this month, talk to them about the importance the right diet has on their hair. Did they know, for example, that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish like salmon are natural shine boosters, or that the vitamin A, iron, beta carotene, folate, and vitamin C in spinach help prevent hair breakage?
